Avni Aharon 1906-1951
An Israeli painter, born in Russia, came to
Israel in 1925, was influenced by Cezanne and Funaire.
After 1940 his style became more expressive. His
paintings of scenery and nature are attest to
spiritual and sentimental being.
Avni established the Painting and Sculpting
Institute in Tel Aviv in 1939. Today this
famous institute is supported by the city
of Tel Aviv.

Ya'akov Agam
born in Rishon LeZion, studied in Paris
and at the Bezalel Art Institute in Jerusalem.
He did most of his work in Paris. His works
include movies which describe his works and
also his special kind of writing (words that
are written on top of each other).
He also worked in experimental theater, his most
creative and sophisticated work. In spite of this,
his reputation resulted from his work with kinetic
art. The artist uses stylish elements which
repeat themselves and create different effects
according to the position of the viewer in relation
to the creation. Examples of these projects,
which combine water, fire and sound, can be seen
in Tel Aviv and Paris.

Yankel Adler
1895-1949 was born in Lodz, Poland. During the
years 1922-33 he painted fresco and oil paintings
in Disseldorf. In 1933 he moved to Paris and in
1939 he settled in England. He was influenced by
the works of Picasso and Lakella. His first works
depicted the life of the Jews of Poland. Later he
portrayed figures in abstract forms. In later life
he returned his original theme of the portrayal of
Jewish life. His work, "Two Rabbis" (1942) is
displayed in the The Museum of Modern Art in New
York.

Moritz Daniel Oppenheim
1799-1882 was a German Jewish artist
who studied in Rome and was influenced
by the Old and New Testaments.
He painted a series of 19 paintings which
depicted Jewish family traditions. Many
reproductions were made of this series.
The Rothchild family was his patron.

Aviva Uri
was born in 1927 in Safed in the Galilee. She
studied painting from her husband, the Tel
Aviv artists, David Hendler.
Her original style of classic, neat lines
later changed to a spontaneous style, lively, rich
and full of life.
She also painted personal abstract scenes.

Uri Lazar
1861-1931, German, Jewish artist who created
prints. He studied in Disseldorf, Brussels and
Paris. He lived in Berlin and painted its
scenery in the Impressionist style.
He later turned to painting Biblical figures,
among them "Jerimiah" which is in the Tel Aviv
Museum of Art.

Channa Orloff
1888-1968 a Jewish Russian sculptress who
came to Israel in 1904. In 1910 she went to
Paris to study and was greatly influenced
by Cubism and created figures of women and
motherhood. In Paris she made friends with
Modiliani, Sutin and Paskin.
She returned to Israel and made portraits of
the painter Rubin, Channa Rubino, David Ben-
Gurion and Chaim Nachman Bialik.
She left two monumental art objects in Israel:
1. A stone monument in Ein Gev
2. A monument in the memory of Dov Gruner
in Ramat Gan.

Mark Antokolosky
1843-1902 Jewish Russian sculptor who studied
in the Academy of St. Petersburg. In his early
days he sculpted Jewish reliefs (embossed sculptures).
However, his reputation came from his monumental
sculptures of historical Russian figures:
Ivan the Terrible (in Leningrad);
Family members of the Russian Royal Court;
Tolstoy and Turgnayev, famous writers.
He left Russian due to antisemitism and spent
the rest of his life in Paris where he created
the great marble sculpture, "Spinoza".

Ya'akov Epstein
1880-1959 Born in New York to English parents who
had immigrated from Poland. He studied in Paris and
became a British citizen in 1907. He was continually
criticized by both the public and artist community
that his works lacked modesty. His memorial to Oscar
Wilde in the cemetary where is is buried caused quite
a controvesy.
While in Paris he became friends with Picasso, Modaliani,
Baracuzzi and was influenced by the outlook on life and art.

He sculpted many busts of influential personalities
of the 20th century. These are found in the London National
Gallery of Portrait Art.

Mordechai Ardun
Israeli painter, born in Poland in 1896.
He received his art education in Germany.
After he came to Israel, he studied in the
Bezelel Academy in Jerusalem (1933).
During the year 1940-52 he was the director
of Bezelel.
He is known for his exact paintings,
the result of careful the working and reworking
of his ideas.
His style combines layers of bright colors and
abstract figures giving hint to religious values,
tradition and mysticism. His most important works
are those about Jerusalem and he is known for his
gigantic canvases.

Ariah Aruch
1908-1974 Israeli painter originally from Russia, studied
in the Bezelel Academy in Jerusalem and later in Paris.
In 1949 he was Israel's Foreign Minister in Brazil Sweden.
In 1950 in returned to Israel to paint. His paintings
became more and more abstract, typified small lines
and spontaneous sketches.

Avigdor Aricha
Born in 1929 he is a painter and illustrator.
He started sketching in a concentration camp
in Romania between 1941-44.
After he came to Israel, he studied at the
Bezelel Academy in Jerusalem and later in
Paris. His style progressed from figurative
to abstract painting.
Since the 1970's his works have shown a direct
connection to the classical French style of painting.
In 1999 both the Israel Museum of Jerusalem and
the Tel Aviv Museum of Art saluted his contribution
to the art world.

Alexander Archipenko
1887-1964 Russian born sculptor who became a
United States citizen in 1928. A modern sculptor, he
sculpted in different styles and techniques. In 1908
he moved to Paris and adopted the cubist style. During
this same time, he invented "painted sculptures" in
which wood and metal are stuck on the paintings. Some
of his sculptures are painted in a revolutionary way.
Many of his works are shown in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
